The All Whites are set for a major payday after qualifying for the Fifa World Cup after a record financial distribution was approved.

The 48 teams taking part in this summer’s tournament will share a pot of US$871 million ($1.48 billion), with each team taking home US$10 million just for qualifying.

New Zealand received US$8m when they last qualified for the World Cup in 2010, with Fifa having said the commercial success of the men’s tournament has allowed them to increase the prize money.

“Fifa is proud to be in its most solid financial position ever,” Fifa president Gianni Infantino said, “enabling us to help all our Member Associations in an unprecedented way.

“This is one more example of how Fifa’s resources are reinvested back into the game.”

Meanwhile, the preparation money per team has increased to US$2.5m and subsidies for team delegation costs and increased team ticketing allocations has reached over US$16m.

Football’s world governing body is expected to make US$13b from the current four-year World Cup cycle, which includes and ends with the tournament in North America this year.

The All Whites will hope to go further than they did in 2010, when the team went unbeaten but failed to make the knockout stage.

New Zealand might stand a better chance at making it past the group stage this time around, with the number of teams taking part increased to 48.

The top two teams from each group and the eight best third-place teams will make their way through to the Round of 32, but face stiff competition from Belgium, Egypt and Iran in Group G.

Despite a season marred by injury, All Whites captain Chris Wood is expected to lead his team into the tournament and is back on the scoresheet after slotting home his first goal in eight months for Nottingham Forest in their 5-0 thrashing of Sunderland in the English Premier League.
