Kiwi motocross sensation Cole Davies was imperious on Saturday night as he gave the rest of the Australian Supercross championship SX2 250cc field a schooling on how to win finals.

Davies, the AMA Supercross 250cc East and AMA Motocross 250cc champion, set his marker out early on the day by consistently being the fastest rider at Auckland’s North Harbour Stadium, capturing pole position in qualifying by over half a second clear of the next-best rider, Max Anstie.

The triple crown finals format featured three races in each division (SX1 and SX2), with riders’ results tallied across all three gate drops to determine the overall positions for the event. Davies put on a masterclass in front of nearly 20,000 avid Kiwi fans with a clean sweep of all three races.

“It was a good night. I finished first in every session, so I’m stoked,” Davies told the Herald after the last race of the night.

“A clean sweep of all the finals and fastest in every session. I’m just really happy with how the day went.

“The team’s happy, everyone’s happy. I’m just glad I could put on a show for my family and friends.

“It’s been a great day and to do it here in New Zealand in front of the fans makes it even better. I could hear them every lap. I haven’t really been back in New Zealand for a while, so to come back and win in front of everyone and have them show their support is great.”

Davies’ complete dominance in the SX2 class was evident from the very first race, when he finished almost 10s ahead of Cameron McAdoo and Ryder Kingsford. Davies did not disappoint in his second race, again leaving the rest of the field behind, winning by 6s over McAdoo and Lux Turner.

“A lot of these guys race in America. They’re the same guys I’m racing over there and they do pretty well in the States. I just feel like I’ve been putting in the work and I’m in a really good spot right now. I’d put it down to that.

“Everything feels good. The bike’s working well.”

As the riders got ready for race three, the crowd was anticipating another display of world-class riding and Davies did not disappoint. He rocketed out of the gate and led into the first corner, leaving the rest to battle it out for the minor placings.

Davies was again not challenged for the lead and collected his third win of the night this time by over 10s from McAdoo and Ryder Kingsford.

“It’s definitely important to get a good start because you can’t really control what other people do. The best thing is to get out in front and stay out of trouble. Getting a good start helps you do that,” Davies said.

The series now heads back across the Ditch to Geelong for round three on November 7. Davies will again be competing there, before returning to the US.

“It will good to get another race under my belt and get some seat time. I’ve got another race next weekend in Melbourne, so that should be fun. It’s all good preparation, and I’m stoked with how things went [in Auckland],” he said.
