Woman in her 30s left with critical injuries after morning shark attack at Sydney's Coogee Beach.
Woman in her 30s left with critical injuries after morning shark attack at Sydney's Coogee Beach.

A woman taking a morning dip at the popular swimming beach has been rushed to hospital in a critical condition after being attacked by a shark.

Australian police said the badly injured swimmer- a woman in her 30s- had to be dragged from the water after being bitten by a shark at Coogee Beach on Saturday.

Nine News reported the woman was pulled from the water just after 11am by members of the public who gave her first aid before emergency services arrived.

Coogee as well as neighbouring beaches Clovelly, and Bronte, have all been closed following the attack.

A witness told News.com.au the woman was swimming laps not far from the shore where “fins and a tail” were seen.

They said a lifeguard on a surfboard rushed over when they heard screams and a shark alarm was sounded.

A NSW Ambulance spokesperson said they had multiple resources on route including a rescue helicopter.

She was being treated for serious leg and arm injuries and airlifted to hospital.

In January, three shark attacks happened at local Sydney beaches in a timeframe of just over 24 hours.

One of the attacks in Sydney Harbour where a 12-year-old boy was hospitalised with critical injuries, while another was a surfer in his 20s in critical condition after an attack at Manly beach.

An 11-year-old surfer was assisted, uninjured, off Dee Why Beach after a shark bit his surfboard.
