John MacDonald: Here's who I think deserves to be PM

After last night’s final major party leaders debate, a mate of mine texted saying it had been like watching two minnows play a dull match at a World Cup event.

He said one might be better than the other, but you wouldn’t pay money to see it.

Which is kind of how I felt about it too. Nevertheless, like it or not, one of them is going to be our next Prime Minister.

As there is with all these debates, there’s a lot of talk about who won, who lost. All of that.

There’s also a lot of talk during an election campaign about who people want to be the next Prime Minister. But who deserves to be the next Prime Minister?

Which of the two, Chris Hipkins and Christopher Luxon, deserves to get the top job?

For me, it’s clear-cut.

Neither of them are outstanding or inspiring. Maybe it’s because this election is a rinse and repeat of the last election, with the two Chrises.

But, when it comes to who I think of the two deserves the top job, it’s Christopher Luxon.

I won’t be voting for Luxon but, compared to Chris Hipkins, he’s the one who I think has earned the chance to be given another go.

Chris Hipkins is like someone applying for a job that they used to do once and who thinks that, because they’ve done it before, they should get their old job back again.

I’ve said before that I’ve got no idea what Chris Hipkins has been doing over the past three years.

It was only about five minutes ago when his party started delivering some actual policies.

For a long time, it seemed his strategy for the election was to use Christopher Luxon’s shortcomings, and there are many, as a reason for people to vote Labour. Talk about lazy and uninspiring.

But, even now that we have some policies on the table from Labour, I am far from convinced that they deserve another term and I’m certainly not convinced that Chris Hipkins deserves to be Prime Minister.

Not that Christopher Luxon is a shining light, either. But, of the two, Luxon is the one more deserving of another shot.
