Brick-and-mortar bias: Kiwis returning to stores as in-person retail spending rises
City and town centres are busier than they were after Covid.
Latest Paymark data shows retail spending in the past few months has been down on the same period last year.
But new Experian data shows shops, bars, and restaurants in most cities have been seeing business pick up since Covid – Wellington being an outlier.
Retail NZ CEO Carolyn Young told Mike Hosking that in New Zealand, it's often easier for people to stop in store rather than online, due to geography and freight distribution.
She says around 80% of shopping is done in person, which is why having busy city centres and people working in offices is so important for retail in New Zealand.
