The Transport Minister wants to get Northland booming as the Government moves ahead with the first stage of the Northland Expressway.

It's signed a $3.6 billion deal with the Northway consortium to design, build, and operate the road, stretching from Warkworth to Te Hana.

The 26-kilometre, four-lane highway will include 15 bridges and twin tunnels a kilometre long.

Chris Bishop told Mike Hosking it'll be an expensive road, but this is the sort of game-changing infrastructure we need.

He’s also offering assurances that it won’t end in a cost blowout – saying there’s extensive conditions in the contract around delivery.

Bishop says the consortium will also maintain the road for 25 years, once it opens in 2033/34.
