"The tide is turning": Education Minister pleased with sharp improvement in primary school maths scores
Primary school maths achievement is showing a significant rebound.
The New Zealand Council for Educational Research has analysed 15 years of Progressive Achievement Test results in reading and maths.
It found the average maths score this year was about four months ahead of 2024's.
Education Minister Erica Stanford told Mike Hosking that's a huge jump and the biggest improvement in maths seen in years.
She says it represents thousands of children doing better in the classroom, who will go on to succeed in life.
The data also found reading vocabulary has steadily improved in the last six years.
Stanford says this report isn't the first to say this, as other data is showing the tide is turning.
