Rookie claims provision pole at Bathurst as 'fancied runners' fall short of shootout
A Supercars rookie has announced himself ahead of the latest edition of Bathurst.
Zach Bates has claimed provisional pole heading into today's Top 10 shootout, by clocking the first sub two-minute-four second lap in a Gen-three car at the track.
Matt Payne is the sole lead New Zealand driver to make the shootout, with Richie Stanaway's also in the final stage of qualifying as the co-driver for James Golding.
Ryan Wood will start from the back of the grid for Sunday's race after a crash in practice kept him from attempting qualifying.
NZ Herald Motorsport Correspondent Eric Thompson joined D'Arcy to break down the events.
