Public put at risk: Man charged after laser aimed at police helicopter
An Auckland man is facing charges after allegedly pointing a laser at a police helicopter flying over Mt Eden in the early hours of the morning.
The Eagle was targeted about 2.50am, with the longest of several laser strikes lasting 30 seconds.
Auckland City area response manager Acting Senior Sergeant Christian Iogha said officers spotted the man moving through his house, tracking the helicopter’s movements.
“On board technology quickly identified the property and police were able to take a man into custody without incident.”
A 28-year-old man has been charged with interfering with an aircraft under the Civil Aviation Act 2023.
He is due to appear in Auckland District Court on October 27.
Iogha said the alleged behaviour put the crew and public at risk.
“The police helicopter crew is out there working hard for the protection and safety of our community and this type of behaviour puts everyone at risk.”
