Buildings evacuated, major road closed after gas leak in Newmarket
Emergency services are attending a gas main leak in Auckland’s Newmarket after a line was damaged during earthworks in the area this morning.
Police said the gas main was struck while work was being carried out, prompting a major response from emergency services.
Khyber Pass Rd has been closed between Crowhurst St and Broadway while crews work to make the area safe.
Nearby buildings have been evacuated as a precaution. Fire and Emergency’s incident log shows crews were called to a hazardous gas incident in Newmarket at 9.41am, with appliances from Remuera and Auckland City attending.
There have been no reports of injuries.
A photo from the area shows a Fire and Emergency command vehicle and firefighters behind a police cordon on Khyber Pass Rd near Broadway.
Police are advising motorists to avoid the area and expect delays while repairs are carried out, while Auckland Transport has warned the incident may cause disruptions, cancellations and detours to public transport services.
