One person is dead after a house fire engulfed a home in the West Auckland suburb of Henderson on Saturday night.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson told the Herald that multiple calls reported the blaze.

The single-storey home, measuring about 15m by 15m, was fully involved in fire when crews arrived.

Police confirmed on Sunday morning that one person who was originally unaccounted for had died.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant James Kim said a scene guard was put in place at the property overnight.

“The cause of the fire remains unexplained at this early stage.”

Police will be carrying out a scene examination at the house today, including working with fire investigators.

Members of the community may see an increased presence while inquiries are ongoing, Kim said.

About 35 firefighters responded yesterday, supported by six fire trucks, a command unit, a hazardous materials unit and a breathing apparatus support vehicle.

Crews came from Henderson, Glen Eden, Te Atatū, Auckland City and Titirangi.

The incident was escalated to a second alarm response as firefighters battled the blaze and carried out a search and rescue operation for the missing person.

Assistant Area Commander Katie Pocock told the Herald at the scene that Fire and Emergency New Zealand was alerted to a house fire on Forest Hill Road in Henderson at approximately 8.37pm yesterday.

On arrival, crews were confronted with a well-involved property fire and were advised that a person was reportedly inside.
