Residents hear loud screaming after alleged Blockhouse Bay stabbing

A resident of an Auckland street where a man was stabbed says “loud, scary” screaming rang out during a violent confrontation before police arrived to discover a critically injured person at a nearby bus stop.

Other neighbours told the Herald they saw a group of young people gathered on Holbrook St in Blockhouse Bay before the incident unfolded on Saturday afternoon.

Police launched a homicide investigation yesterday after the man succumbed to his injuries and died in hospital on Sunday night, despite emergency surgery.

Locals who watched the melee develop said a large group of youths and young people were gathered around a home on Holbrook St, near the Shoreham St intersection, at about 3.40pm on Saturday.

They then spilled onto the street and were drinking, the neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said.

“Scary” and “loud” screaming followed before police arrived.

Police were at the Blockhouse Bay street where a man was fatally stabbed on Saturday.

Police had a large presence for the rest of the day with several cars and a helicopter hanging around the area.

Acting Detective Inspector Craig Bolton said the man was stabbed during the confrontation before leaving in a vehicle with his associates and stopping at a nearby bus stop on Blockhouse Bay Rd.

An ambulance was called, and the man was taken to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition.

He underwent emergency surgery and was kept in intensive care but died on Sunday evening.

Police have launched a homicide investigation, named Operation Falconer, and are seeking witnesses to the initial confrontation on Holbrook St or near the bus stop on Blockhouse Bay Rd.

Scene examinations have been carried out at two locations, including where the man was located by ambulance staff.

The neighbours said it was the first violent incident they have heard of on the street and that the neighbourhood was safe.

This morning police were canvassing neighbouring homes in efforts to piece together events of the day.

An interim non-publication order prevents the man’s name and identifying details from being reported. Police were liaising with his family.

“We are in a sensitive phase of our investigation, and we haven’t taken this step lightly, but the community can be reassured that we are working to identify those present and responsible,” Bolton said.
