Pedestrian dead after being hit by car in Auckland, man seen in handcuffs

A person has died after being hit by a car in East Auckland’s Pakuranga Heights last night.

Emergency services were called at 9.05pm on Monday to reports of a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian, police said this morning.

“Sadly, despite best efforts, the pedestrian died at the scene.”

A black Honda allegedly involved in the incident was spotted about 100m up the road from the pedestrian.

A Herald photographer at the scene said Pakuranga Road was closed between Cascades Rd and Bells Rd. About 10 police vehicles were at the intersection of the two roads.

The photographer said police were speaking to a man in the back of a police car before removing him, searching him and placing him in handcuffs.

He was then put back into the police car, which left the scene.

The Serious Crash Unit attended and enquiries were continuing into the circumstances of the crash.

Hato Hone St John said the ambulance service was called to the scene on Pakuranga Rd at 9.10pm. Further media enquiries were directed to police.

One social media commenter said they had seen a person lying in the road following the incident.

Photos from the scene last night show police markers laid across the road close to a bus stop, while a black car is parked nearby with a smashed front window.
