Watch: Luxon fronts media as Parliament enters its final week

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon will front his weekly post-Cabinet press conference as Parliament begins its final sitting week of the term.

He is expected to talk about the India Free Trade Agreement, which will shortly receive the royal assent, meaning it will have cleared its final hurdle to enter into domestic law.

Luxon is also likely to talk up the significance of the Government’s Resource Management Act replacement bills, which will have their third and final readings in Parliament this week.

Luxon is also expected to talk about supermarkets, as more parties launch their policies on boosting supermarket competition. Over the weekend, Labour announced it would force Woolworths and Foodstuffs to run their distribution arms separately from their retail operations.

National has proposed going further, breaking Pak’nSave off from Four Square and New World, if a Commerce Commission study recommends it.

Speaking on Newstalk ZB’s Mike Hosking Breakfast this morning, Luxon said he was “all in” on the plan, but if the Commerce Commission rejects the idea, “we won’t be doing it”.

He disagreed with Hosking’s claim that National – supposedly the party of enterprise and hard work – was “picking on industries you think are a bit suspect”.

“We’re also a party of competition,” he told Hosking, adding that the supermarket sector in New Zealand was “fundamentally not competitive”.
