Residents in Waiouru have been warned not to drink water from their taps after chemicals were detected in the water supply.

The Manawatū-Whanganui Emergency Management Group sent out an emergency mobile alert this evening.

Locals were warned not to use tap water for drinking, making ice, preparing food or infant formula, or brushing teeth.

The group said a “detection of chemicals in a water sample above the maximum allowable value under the Drinking Water Standards” was to blame.

Residents who require drinking water can collect supplies from the New Zealand Defence Force base.

Ruapehu District Council and the NZDF have purchased supplies of bottled water, with five-litre containers being delivered to the Waiouru military base.

The notice will remain in place until further notice.

More information is available on the Ruapehu District Council Facebook page.
