Three youths in custody after reckless ride in stolen car across two cities
Three youths are in custody after a reckless ride in a stolen car spanning two cities.
Police said their journey began in Whangārei after a Toyota Aqua was stolen from Okara Drive about 5.10pm last night.
Manurewa police acting Senior Sergeant Jane Cornish said two youths were allegedly seen shoplifting a screwdriver from a nearby supermarket before the vehicle was stolen.
“Just after 10.30pm, officers in Counties Manukau observed the stolen vehicle travelling near Weymouth Rd without its headlights on,” Cornish said.
“Eagle was deployed and tracked the vehicle from above as it drove dangerously across Manurewa.”
Spikes were deployed on Great South Rd and the vehicle stopped on McAnnalley St.
Police said the occupants fled on foot, but officers found all three hiding behind nearby commercial premises.
A screwdriver was found at the scene.
“This was a dangerous display of driving that put the vehicle’s occupants and the public at risk,” Cornish said.
The three youths, aged 13, 14 and 15, were referred to Youth Aid.
