Athletics community mourns young Australian runner
The Australian athletics community is mourning the loss of 21-year-old runner Natasha Ward.
NSW Athletics announced on Facebook on Thursday that Ward had died.
“It is with deep sadness that we inform the NSW and Australian athletics community of the passing of beloved athlete Natasha Ward,” the post read.
“Natasha was a celebrated middle-distance runner. As a junior, she medalled at NSW All Schools over 1500m. She carried that success into her senior career, medalling at UniSport Nationals over 1500m in 2023, and this April, claiming UniSport National bronze in the 800m.
“Beyond her achievements on the track, Natasha was a greatly loved member of our community. “Her kindness and joy touched everyone fortunate enough to know her, and her magnetic smile and warm personality have left a permanent mark on Australian athletics.
“Natasha’s enthusiasm and determination inspired her training partners.
“Our thoughts are with Natasha’s family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. RIP Natasha.”
Tragedy has rocked the athletic community in NSW, with the passing of 21-year-old All Schools medalist Natasha Ward.
Her death comes just weeks after fellow rising Australian sprinter Jemma Stapleton, 25, died while on holiday in Thailand.
Stapleton was killed after coming off a motorbike in Thailand while travelling with her parents and brothers, 7News reported.
The star from Melbourne was a finalist in the 2025 Stawell Gift, which is one of Australia’s most prestigious races.
The Victorian Athletic League said Stapleton was a valued member of the community “whose presence, character and contribution left a lasting impact on those around her”.
