A man is dead and another has been charged with murder after a “grievous” attack in Auckland’s central city last night.

Emergency services were called to Wellesley St East about 6.45pm after reports of an assault involving people known to each other.

Police say a man was found with critical injuries but died on his way to hospital.

A 23-year-old man is due to appear in Auckland District Court today charged with murder.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Wilson said one person was taken into custody and police were not searching for anyone else in relation to the incident.

Cordons remained on Wellesley St East late into the evening as police worked to establish what happened.

Several Auckland Transport bus services were diverted and stops near AUT temporarily closed due to the police response.

A Herald photographer at the scene said detectives and a specialist forensic photographer examined an area of Wellesley St East near Princes St, where two forensic tents were erected.

A black Tesla remained in the middle of Wellesley St with its doors open.
