Auckland fans come out to celebrate Ryan Fox’s Open win
Crowds have packed out Auckland’s Takutai Square for a public celebration of Ryan Fox following his return to New Zealand after winning the Open Championship in England.
Fox became the fourth Kiwi to win a major golf championship behind Sir Bob Charles, Michael Campbell and Dame Lydia Ko, with Charles being the only other to lift the Claret Jug.
Fans could be seen swarming toward the golfer as he carried the trophy up to the stage with the cameras out ready to snap a picture while he stopped to sign autographs at the event.
The 39-year-old said he had had a crazy time since taking home the title.
“It’s been a whirlwind few days since winning the Open and, to be fair, my head is still spinning as I take in what I’ve achieved and what’s to come,” Fox said.
“But one of the first things I wanted to do was come home and share this incredibly special time with my family, friends and all the Kiwis who have supported me throughout my career.”

Mayor Wayne Brown and representatives from Golf New Zealand joined Fox on stage, with the mayor saying Fox had done Auckland and the country proud.
Meanwhile, Golf NZ’s acting CEO, Gregg Thorpe, said the Kiwi’s win at Royal Birkdale was a key moment in the history of golf for Aotearoa.

“Through his will to keep improving and his competitive desire, he has shown every young golfer in this country what’s possible when talent is matched with Kiwi determination,” Thorpe said.
“We couldn’t be prouder of him and we’re looking forward to celebrating this achievement with him, his family and New Zealand.”

Fox appeared on stage with the Claret Jug and fans were encouraged to wear black and celebrate his achievement.
Earlier, the golfer was seen arriving at the Royal Auckland and Grange Golf Club in Papatoetoe with the trophy to hold a media conference.
