Black Ferns co-captain out for season with injury
Kennedy Tukuafu’s year on the rugby field is over.
The Black Ferns co-captain has been ruled out for six months with a hamstring injury, suffered while playing for Chiefs Manawa in Super Rugby Aupiki.
In the side’s third-round clash with Hurricanes Poua, Tukuafu was caught injured as a result of a croc-roll clean out as she tried to get over the ball at the breakdown.
After assessment, Tukuafu was found to have a hamstring tear that would require surgery to repair.
“We’re really feeling for Kennedy,” Black Ferns head coach Whitney Hansen said.
“Injuries are always tough and this is a hard setback for someone who gives so much to the Black Ferns.
“Kennedy leads with authenticity and care and her influence on this group extends well beyond what she does on the field.
“We know she’ll approach her recovery with the same resilience, professionalism and determination she shows every day. The whole Black Ferns whānau will be right behind her as she works towards her return.”
It’s the latest in a frustrating run of injuries for the 37-test Black Fern.
She suffered a knee injury during the Pacific Four Series last year but returned for the Rugby World Cup in England later in 2025.
In 2022, Tukuafu suffered a dislocated knee, torn calf muscle and ligament damage from a knock in training, but she was again able to return later in the year and went on to be part of the World Cup-winning Black Ferns team.
“Although I’m out of action for a while, I’m still closely involved with my team and I’m grateful for the support from my teammates, whānau and the wider rugby community,” Tukuafu said.
“My focus now is on surgery, rehabilitation and doing everything I can to return to the game.”
