'The Crown's got a role to play': Independent review launched into Gisborne District Council's forestry response
An independent review's cleared Gisborne District Council of 'anti-forestry' sentiment, but warns it to watch its tone.
The panel - chaired by former Justice Minister Chris Finlayson - found no evidence the council is driving companies away.
But it says stronger safeguards are justified, given the erosion-prone land and risks of harvesting.
Finlayson says the council's taken some of his criticisms on board.
"Posting an advertisement, for example, on the website about the need for a compliance officer who would stand up to the forestry companies - that kind of tonal stuff's not very impressive."
